In the town of Haldwani in Uttarakhand, violence broke out after a mosque was demolished during a “anti-encroachment drive.” Protesters and police clashed as because of the authorities’ attempt to demolish the mosque and the nearby madrassa, which were unlawful buildings.

Deaths and Injuries

The violent altercations that took place on Thursday night resulted in the deaths of at least four individuals and hundreds of injuries. Locals disagreed with the authorities’ assertion that they had been given advance notice, which led to protests in response to the demolition.

Haldwani Under Communal hostility

A curfew was imposed in Banbhoolpura as because of the communal hostility that was prevalent in the Haldwani area. As officials worked to restore order, they issued a shoot-at-sight order against rioters.

Context of Eviction Notices

In January of last year, the district saw protests after over 50,000 people—mostly Muslims—were presented with eviction notices on grounds that they were occupying Indian Railways-owned land illegally. The Indian Supreme Court later decided to halt the demolitions.

Authorities’ Perspective

According to District Magistrate Vandana Singh, the mosque and madrassa were destroyed because they were built unlawfully on property owned by the government. Although a mob attack followed the effort, she said, it was not intended to target any particular community .

Locals’ Denial and Allegations:

They refuted having received advance warning and contended that the mosque was destroyed before a definitive court ruling, which runs counter to the allegations made by the government. There are claims that protesters brandishing illegal firearms fired at police.
