Kamila Valieva

Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, who tested positive for the cardiac drug trimetazidine in December 2021 when she was 15 years old, faces a four-year suspension. Her positive test was determined to be devoid of hard data to back up her statement by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Unjustified Strawberry Dessert Claim

Valerieva stated that her grandfather’s strawberry dessert might have contributed to her positive drug test. She proposed that her grandfather had mashed up pills of heart medication on the same cutting board, therefore introducing trimetazidine into the dessert.

Evidentiary challenges and CAS findings

In its 129-page report, CAS rejected Valieva’s “Grandfather explanation,” noting problems with the evidence. There were issues because there was no proof that her grandfather had used trimetazidine prior to December 25, 2021. The decision brought to light various flaws in the evidence and unresolved issues.

Trimetazidine: Prohibited Metabolic Modulator

Trimetazidine falls under the category of “metabolic modulator,” and its use by athletes is prohibited both during and after competition. Although it isn’t a stimulant that raises heart rate, it is thought to improve physical activity endurance.

Valieva’s rise and success at the Beijing Olympics in 2022

In spite of the drug scandal, Valieva became well-known during the Beijing Olympics. She won a gold medal for the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in team figure skating and became the first female skater to successfully complete a quadruple leap.

Valerieva’s attorneys put out a number of justifications for the positive test, but CAS treated Valerieva as an adult and determined that her degree of guilt was considerable. Due to a national ban stemming from a state-sponsored doping scandal, Russian athletes who participated for the ROC as neutral competitors may be affected by the decision.
