Recognition of Gallantry and Service

On Republic Day 2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced that a total of 1,132 personnel from various security forces have been honored with Gallantry and Service Medals. These personnel represent the Police, Fire Service, Home Guard, Civil Defence, and Correctional Service.

Republic Day 2024: Gallantry Awards Distribution

– Medal Breakdown: Among the recipients

  • 2 personnel were awarded the President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG),
  • 275 received Medals for Gallantry (GM)
  • 102 were honored with President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM)
  • 753 were presented with the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM)

– Posthumous Recognition: Notably, late Head Constables Sanwala Ram Vishnoi and Shishu Pal Singh of the Border Security Force were posthumously awarded the President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) in recognition of their exceptional bravery.

– Regional Recognition: Of the 277 Gallantry Awards, 119 personnel from Left-wing extremist-affected areas, 133 from Jammu and Kashmir, and 25 from other regions have been acknowledged for their courageous actions.

State-wise Distribution

The Gallantry Awards have been distributed among various states and Union Territories, with concentrations in Jammu and Kashmir Police, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Delhi, CRPF, SSB, and other states, Union Territories (UTs), and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).

Rationalization of Awards

The Ministry of Home Affairs has taken steps to rationalize and transform the award system by merging sixteen gallantry and service medals into four categories: President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG), Medal for Gallantry (GM), President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), and Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).

– Criteria for Awards: President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and Medal for Gallantry (GM) are awarded for Rare Conspicuous Act of Gallantry and Conspicuous Act of Gallantry, respectively.

President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) is given for a distinguished record in service, while the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) is awarded for valuable service characterized by resource and devotion to duty.

Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards-2023

President Droupadi Murmu has approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards-2023 on 31 individuals, including Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak, and Jeevan Raksha Padak recipients. Notably, three awardees have been posthumously honored with Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak.
