Shettar

Remarkably, Jagadish Shettar, the former chief minister of Karnataka, has returned to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) less than a year after quitting the party due to “ill treatment.” Re-joining the BJP at its Delhi headquarters, Shettar is a well-known politician from Karnataka and a six-time MLA. This action, which was planned by Amit Shah, the Home Minister, represents a dramatic political realignment.

Shettar expressed his dissatisfaction with the BJP and, in an unexpected move last year, joined the Congress. Shortly before the Karnataka Assembly elections in 2023, he made the shift. He ran against the BJP candidate and lost. He had formerly served with the BJP and was fielded by the Congress from the Hubli-Dharwad Central assembly constituency.

Shettar’s Comeback

Renowned for his ties to the politically powerful Lingayat clan, Jagadish rejoined the BJP in the company of prominent party figures, such as state party chairman BY Vijayendra and former chief minister BS Yediyurappa. Discussions and words of encouragement from BJP officials and workers marked the reunion.

Congress Reacts to the Change in Politics

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of the Congress noted that Jagadish joined their party because he felt “disrespected” by the BJP in reaction to Jagdish’s comeback. The Congress leader emphasized that Shettar wasn’t treated unfairly or with disdain within the Congress by pointing out that he was given a ticket for the Assembly election and subsequently selected as an MLC.
