In December, the number of new investors on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) increased significantly to 21.1 lakh, a 47% increase from the previous month. The robust returns in the Indian equities market have contributed to this growth, which is the greatest since May 2019.
West India Is at the Top of the Regional Trends
All regions saw a rise in investor registrations, while West India had a startling 69% monthly increase, reaching 6.6 lakh registrations. After a 50% increase, 8.9 lakh registrations were made in North India. 31% more people registered in East India, at 2.5 lakh, while 21% more people registered in South India, at 3.2 lakh.
Maharashtra took the lead back in terms of states with 3 lakh registrations, ahead of Uttar Pradesh with 2.9 lakh. The number of registrations in Gujarat doubled from 1.1 lakh to 2.4 lakh, a noteworthy rise of 119%. Notable increases in new registrations were also observed in Rajasthan and Haryana. In the first three quarters of the fiscal year, 48.6% of all new registrations came from the top five states.
Overall: Record-High Number of Investors
By the end of December 2023, there were 8.5 crore registered investors overall. The Indian equities market’s impressive performance is credited with the spike in registrations, which represents the largest monthly gain since May 2019.
