Due to the X app’s apparent restriction of searches pertaining to Taylor Swift, questions have been raised over the platform’s management of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated imagery. The Verge reported that the measure appears to be an attempt to limit the distribution of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated photos of Taylor Swift.

Restricted Searches: X’s “Something Went Wrong” Message

When users try to search for “Taylor Swift” or “Taylor Swift AI” on the app, they get an update that says “Something went wrong,” with no content. Rearranging the search keywords or including Swift’s entire name in quote marks is a workaround that yields results nonetheless. Interestingly, adding more phrases to the prohibited search terms also produces results. Even for the phrases that are otherwise banned, photographs are still displayed on the Media tab.

The app replied over a day after the problem first surfaced, saying it is “actively eliminating all identified images” and pursuing accounts that are uploading them. The site expressly forbids synthetic and altered media, as well as non-consensual nudity. The source of the Taylor Swift-related photos is still unknown despite these efforts; some may be found on websites like Reddit and Instagram, but X has a disproportionate number of them.

AI-Generation Tools and Unmoderated Platforms: A Wider Context

The incident and the rise in popularity of ChatGPT and DALL-E, two AI-generation tools, are happening at the same time. The dispute, however, draws attention to the larger problem of uncontrolled AI models that are unfit for use on open source systems. Concerns about permission, content monitoring, and the appropriate use of media generated by artificial intelligence are topics of ongoing discussion as technology develops. The decision by the app to stop blocking searches for Taylor Swift highlights how AI content is changing and how it affects internet platforms.
