Malaysia, with the use of its unique rotating monarchy system, experiences a historic moment as wealthy Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar of Johor state ascends to the throne. Beginning his reign in the national palace in Kuala Lumpur, the 65-year-old emperor took the oath of office.
Sultan’s Riches and Power
The powerful Iskandar family, well-known for their vast holdings in Singapore and southern Johor state, is led by Ibrahim, who is thought to be worth at least $5.7 billion. Bloomberg states that their assets are spread throughout a number of industries, including telecommunications, real estate, and palm oil.
Oath of Office
In a customary ceremony decked out in royal blue ceremonial clothing, Ibrahim promised to govern Malaysia justly and in conformity with the law and the constitution. The importance of this shift was highlighted by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s attendance at the nationally televised occasion.
The official assumption of duties was recognized by the swearing-in ceremony, but there will be a major coronation event in the upcoming months. In light of the unusual rotational monarchy system in place, this will strengthen Ibrahim’s standing as the country’s head of state.
Sultan Ibrahim’s elevation is a result of his nomination by the nation’s royal family last year, when he succeeded Pahang state’s Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah. This presents challenges. He takes up the position at a time of many difficulties, such as COVID-19 lockdowns and unstable political conditions.
