Targeted by climate change campaigners, the famous “Mona Lisa” painting at the Louvre museum in Paris faces yet another unusual threat. An environmental awareness campaign began when two activists from the French group “Riposte Alimentaire” hurled soup against the glass shield.

Two activists made the audacious decision to throw soup at Leonardo da Vinci’s protective glass after evading security measures and approaching the artwork as closely as possible. This event comes after the painting’s 2022 run-in with food cream.

Activist’s Message

The message of the activists was to raise awareness of environmental protection while raising doubts about the sustainability of the current food system. They did this by shouting in French. The organization “Riposte Alimentaire” released a statement highlighting the shortcomings of the current food model, specifically its effect on marginalized groups.

To address food-related difficulties, the activists suggested offering citizens a monthly food card worth €150. Their demonstration served as a call to action to highlight the difficulties encountered by the most disadvantaged people and to uphold their fundamental right to food.

Reaction from the Louvre

The Louvre stated that the protective glass kept the painting intact. The ‘Mona Lisa’ was temporarily taken down for cleaning at the Salle des Etats. In light of the occurrence, the museum intends to lodge a complaint.

Minister’s Statement: France’s Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, declared that there was no justification for attacking this piece of cultural property and denounced the attack on the “Mona Lisa.” The importance of the artwork folr upcoming generations was stressed by her.
