Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, has drawn attention to the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya and has criticized the apparent underrepresentation of lower castes. Gandhi particularly questioned the lack of participation from Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and expressed concerns on the event’s inclusivity in his remarks.
Rahul Gandhi Draws Attention to Social Representation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and RSS leader Mohan Bhagwat presided over the spectacular event last month to formally open the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Marking a major turning point in the temple’s construction, the ceremony drew thousands of attendees, including celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan. Rahul Gandhi’s comments have drawn attention to issues with social representation at such high-profile events, however.
Highlighting the Absence of OBC and ST/SC Faces
During the ceremony, Rahul Gandhi notably brought out the lack of representation from Scheduled Tribes/Scheduled Castes (ST/SC) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). He questioned the inclusivity and singled out Bollywood actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan, the latter of whom is said not to have attended the function.
Opposition’s Stance on the Event
The Opposition opted not to attend the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple, claiming that the BJP was trying to use the occasion for political gain.
