A 29-year-old lawyer from Bengaluru has been the most recent victim of the FedEx scam, going through a traumatic ordeal at the hands of con artists that are impersonating law enforcement officials. The event highlights the concerning increase in courier scams as well as the methods used by cybercriminals to con people of their money.

The victim, a lawyer in Bengaluru, was tricked by con artists acting as FedEx courier company employees after falling for their frequent phone and video conversations. Over the course of about thirty-five hours, she was forced to believe that illegal narcotics had been found in a courier package under her name, which resulted in charges against her.

Scammers’ Method of Operation

By posing as FedEx personnel and law enforcement officials, the con artists scared the victim by claiming that she was involved in terrorism or money laundering. Under the pretense of verification, they forced her to transfer a sizeable amount of money to other accounts and tricked her into divulging personal information.

Blackmail and extortion

The victim was made to strip on a Skype conversation for a fictitious “narcotics test” and was the target of psychological manipulation for a single, almost 36-hour session. The victim’s dread and anxiety increased when the scammers threatened to post the compromising footage on the dark web.

Report to Authorities

The victim went to the police and lodged a complaint against the scammers following the terrible event. This instance emphasises how crucial it is to notify law enforcement authorities of such scams as soon as possible and to seek out support from cybercrime departments.

Preventive Measures

FedEx stressed in a statement that it does not ask for personal information from clients via unsolicited phone calls or messages in response to the growing number of courier scam occurrences. Consumers are advised to exercise caution and not give out personal information to strangers over the phone.
