All 74 individuals on board, including 65 Ukrainian Prisoners of War (POWs), perished in the crash of the Russian military transport aircraft Ilyushin-76 in the Belgorod region of Russia. During a regular flight, something went wrong in the Korocha neighbourhood close to the Ukrainian border. Lacking control, the plane plummeted quickly, crashed close to a residential area, and caught fire.
Purpose of The Russian Flight
The IL-76 was en route to the Belgorod region with 65 seized Ukrainian army servicemen in preparation for an exchange. In addition, three escorts and six crew members were there. A panel of investigation into the crash has been established by Moscow.
Conflicting Claims
Ukraine is looking into Russia’s accusations that the downed aircraft was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war on a humanitarian mission. According to some Ukrainian authorities, the plane was carrying missiles intended for the Russian S-300 air defense system. Following a verbal spat, Russian officials accused Kiev of shooting down the jet; an accusation that Ukrainian officials refute.
International Scrutiny
There have been calls for a comprehensive inquiry to ascertain the reason of the crash following the horrific occurrence, which has drawn international attention. The scenario is made more complex by the opposing accounts from Russia and Ukraine, which calls for an unbiased investigation to provide a clearer picture of the circumstances behind the plane crash.
