During Day 2 match, cricket veteran and commentator Sunil Gavaskar expressed dissatisfaction with Shubman Gill’s shot selection. Gavaskar questioned Gill’s decision to go for an on-drive after putting in a lot of work, calling Gill’s attempt at an on-drive a poor execution.

Sunil Gavaskar said he was confused by the kind of shot Gill was trying to do, adding that although an aerial shot could make sense, the badly done on-drive was concerning. The disappointment came from thinking that Gill had worked hard to earn his wicket, and that his poor shot choice had cost him the wicket

Gill hit a wafty slap in the 35th over, trying to neither clear the field nor effectively rotate the strike when faced with a delivery from Hartley. Gill was caught at mid-wicket, as was bound to happen. He struck out 23 runs from 66 balls faced, which was the slowest strike rate of any batter who reached the 20-run barrier in the Test.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gavaskar and other observers criticized Gill’s removal, seeing it as an unintentional gift to England. There were doubts about the decision-making behind the unfortunate shot given the squandered chance to extend his innings.
