An unidentified cookie containing peanuts caused a severe allergic response that led to the death of 25-year-old New York performer Órla Baxendale from anaphylactic shock. Her passing serves as a stark reminder of the disastrous effects of a holiday dessert with an incorrect label.
Unfortunate Allergic Reaction
Unaware of the presence of peanuts in Vanilla Florentine Cookies, Órla’s legal team disclosed that the gifted dancer had an “unfortunate incident” following consumption. Given that the packaging made no mention of nuts, the mislabeling was determined to be a “tragic oversight.”
Poor Response to Epinephrine
The extreme allergic reaction that Órla had to the incorrectly labeled cookie proved fatal, even though she had an EpiPen with her. Her untimely death on January 11 from anaphylactic shock was caused by the EpiPen’s inability to counteract the reaction, according to the legal statement.
Manufacturer “Cookies United” claimed to have informed Stew Leonard’s of the product’s inclusion of peanuts in July 2023. But Stew Leonard’s facilities, where the product is packed and marketed under their name, are where the mislabeling occurred.
Responsibility Shift
In a video statement, Stew Leonard’s acknowledged their regret for the event but made it clear that Cookies United had given them the appropriate notice. The business emphasized that Stew Leonard’s was accountable for the mislabeling, claiming that the company created and applied the wrong label.
This terrible episode highlights the necessity for a thorough inquiry to find out what caused the mislabeling and the subsequent death of a bright young artist.
