Yang Hyun Suk

The CEO and former head of K-pop company YG Entertainment, Yang Hyun-suk, received a six-month prison sentence with a one-year probation. This decision relates to allegations of trying to sabotage an investigation into a drug controversy involving B.I., a previous member of YG’s boy band iKON, by forcing a former trainee to retract her police testimony.

The Overturned Verdict

The Seoul High Court rendered the decision, nullifying Yang Hyun-suk’s earlier acquittal by a lower court. The charges centred on claims that he had intimidated the former trainee who had provided police with testimony regarding drug-related concerns involving B.I. in 2016.

Prosecutors brought more accusations against Yang after the district court acquitted him. According to these latest charges, he forced the trainee to change her testimony regarding B.I.’s alleged drug use at a meeting in person.

Former Acquittal of Yang Hyun-suk

Yang Hyun-suk had already been found not guilty in the case by the district court. The CEO allegedly forced the trainee to meet with him in order to have her comments changed, according to the prosecution’s appeal.

Verdict and Sentencing

He is given a six-month prison sentence with a one-year suspension after the Seoul High Court judged him guilty. Furthermore, Mr. Kim, the former managing associate of YG, was sentenced to four months in prison and one year of probation. His activities, such as calling a forced meeting and using his position inappropriately were recognized by the court as improper and possibly exerting undue pressure. But the court also noted that some of the prosecution’s testimony lacked credibility, and there was an absence of concrete evidence.

The legal ramifications of Yang Hyun-suk’s attempt to sway a witness in a drug scandal probe are brought to light by the verdict against him. This case raises more questions about how the K-pop industry’s pursuit of justice intersects with celebrity influence as the court processes progress.
