Researchers in the United States warn that Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), sometimes known as “Zombie Deer Disease,” may be dangerous to humans. Since it was first discovered in November at Yellowstone National Park, the disease has been detected in 800 specimens of elk, moose, and deer in Wyoming.

Signs and Impacts of the Disease on Wildlife

Due to its effect on animals, it is sometimes referred to as “zombie deer.” Neurological symptoms include drooling, poor coordination, loss of weight, and listlessness. CWD is slow-moving that mostly affects elk, moose, and deer that are free-ranging. This makes it tricky.

Widespread Presence and Human Concerns

At least 31 states in the United States and three provinces in Canada have recorded cases of CWD. Outside of North America, cases have been found in moose and reindeer in the Nordic region, as well as a few cases from abroad in South Korea. Although no human infections have been reported, research points to possible risks, particularly for monkeys exposed to contaminated animal flesh or bodily fluids.

Preparation for Potential Spread

Scientists point to historical outbreaks such as mad cow disease to highlight the need of government preparedness. Because I s spillover occurrences are unpredictable, Dr. Cory Anderson emphasizes the importance of being prepared. The necessity for cautious precautions is highlighted by the appeal for alertness, even though no specific risk is stated.
