On February 25, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Sudarshan Setu, the largest cable-stayed bridge in India. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 980 crore, the magnificent bridge connects the Gujarat town of Beyt Dwarka with the Okha mainland across a distance of about 2.32 miles. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was present at the opening ceremony.
Connectivity and Importance
With Sudarshan Setu, pilgrims can go to Beyt Dwarka, a major pilgrimage site close to the port of Okha, with seamless connectivity. The well-known Dwarkadhish temple, devoted to Lord Krishna, is located on the island about 30 miles from Dwarka town.
The Bhagavad Gita verses and Lord Krishna images on both sides of the pathways are a testament to the engineering miracle. Before the bridge was officially opened, Prime Minister Modi called it a “stunning project.”
Sudarshan Setu ‘s Past and Renaming
Sudarshan Setu is the new name for the bridge, which was originally called the “Signature Bridge.” In order to facilitate access for devotees travelling between Okha and Beyt Dwarka, the Center took the initiative to construct it in 2017. To go to the Dwarkadhish Temple in Beyt, Dwarka, before the bridge, pilgrims had to depend on boat transportation.su
