The founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), actor-politician Vijayakanth, passed away on December 28 at MIOT Hospital in Chennai. The 68-year-old’s health has declined, and he was receiving ventilator support while battling pneumonia. The hospital then stressed that pneumonia was the main worry, despite the first reports mentioning a positive COVID-19 test.

Course and Impact on DMDK

Vijayakanth, who gained notoriety as “Captain” for his military-themed film roles, entered politics in 2005 and founded the DMDK. The party garnered 10 percent of the total vote share during the 2006 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, making a major effect. Later, he sided with AIADMK, and in 2011 he was elected Leader of the Opposition. A sea change in Tamil Nadu politics was brought about by his rhetorical sparring match with Jayalalithaa.

Contributions and Legacy

The impact of Vijayakanth’s contributions to politics and film is irreversible. From 2011 to 2016, he led the opposition as part of his journey. The DMDK leader’s impact went beyond politics because of his depiction of appealing roles in Tamil cinema, which elevated him to legendary status.
