Supreme court

Significantly clarifying earlier orders to restrict air and noise pollution, the Supreme Court of India now specifies that all states in the nation, not just Delhi, must abide by its regulations regarding the manufacturing and sale of fireworks. The application, which was submitted in a series of appeals pertaining to the prohibition on firecrackers made of barium, sought measures to reduce pollutants in the air in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The court’s order addressed this request.

Supreme Court’s Orders Not Limited to Holiday Season

The Court declared unequivocally that states ought to put these policies into effect outside of holiday seasons as well. It was refuted that the orders issued by the highest court regarding fireworks were exclusive to Delhi. The Supreme Court’s attempts to prevent air and noise pollution included legislation pertaining to green crackers, that are low-emission and chemical-free.

Green Crackers

Compared to conventional fireworks, green crackers—created by the Council for Scientific as well as Industrial Research-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI)—pose fewer health concerns and have a lower carbon footprint. It’s important to remember that while green crackers contribute little to pollution overall, they are not completely non-polluting.

Implemented by Many States

A number of states have implemented laws limiting the usage and sale of fireworks. For example, Delhi has outlawed the use of firecrackers in any way, including production and storage within the Delhi-NCR area. Some governments, like Maharashtra and Karnataka, have restricted the time during Diwali that crackers can be burst, understanding the trade-off between having a disease-free atmosphere and enjoying fireworks. West Bengal and Punjab have limited their sales to green crackers.

Together, these actions seek to reduce pollution and encourage a safer, cleaner environment for all residents, both during and after the holiday season.
