Recent social media posts claiming that California will outlaw Skittles candies by 2027 have caused uncertainty. Let’s clear the air and say that this is untrue. While some food additives that research have found to be problematic are being addressed by a new California law, hence the colourful candies are untouched.

How Does the Law Work?

The “Skittles ban” is a law that California Governor Gavin Newsom lately signed. It’s more complicated than it seems, though. In order to preserve the public’s health, the law is intended to limit particular food additives. Propylparaben, potassium bromate, red dye 3, and brominated vegetable oil are some of these ingredients.

Why is it called the “Skittles Ban”?

Titanium dioxide, a substance present in Skittles and other products, was originally covered by this regulation. The term “Skittles ban” has persisted around even though titanium dioxide is no longer part of the law. Some false social media posts assert that California will outlaw the candy by by 2027, but this is untrue.

The candy is still accessible to customers. Even if titanium dioxide were still present, businesses would have until 2027 to rework their products to eliminate the prohibited substances.

What’s the Wider Perspective?

Skittles are not impacted by the regulation, but other food products are. This legislation could have an impact on up to 12,000 products because it intends to address ingredients that have caused health issues. Red dye No. 3, for instance, has been linked in some studies to health problems in animals, but there isn’t solid proof that it harms people. The purpose of the law is to control substances that, according to scientific research, may be harmful to human health.

The colourful candy will still be around, but California is taking action to ban specific food ingredients in order to safeguard the public’s health. For a regulation that aims to make our food safer, the “Skittles ban” is a memorable moniker.
