As it became clear that the rumours about Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen’s demise were untrue, the entire world exhaled a sigh of relief. Nandana Deb Sen, Sen’s daughter, clarified on social media that her father is still very much alive and well.
The Misleading Announcement
Sen’s death was accidentally disclosed on social media by American economic historian Claudia Goldin, who is also a 2023 Economics Nobel laureate. She revealed that the news was awful. Her dearest, Professor Amartya Sen, passed away just moments ago, leaving her speechless, which immediately caused alarm among researchers and the general public.
Amartya Sen’s Daughter’s Reassurance: A Warm Response
But Nandana Deb Sen quickly refuted the false information. She confirmed her father’s wellbeing in her tweet and shared touching insights about their most recent time together. She wrote that his hugs were still as strong Sen, who will celebrate his 90th birthday this November, continues to lead an active life, teaching courses at Harvard and working on a new book focused on gender issues.
Rapid Spread Of The False News
When the phony news of Sen’s demise was spread on a Claudia Goldin social media account, it gained popularity. By expressing their condolences and retweeting the article, well-known individuals and supporters of Sen unintentionally assisted in the dissemination of the false information.
Later, Claudia Goldin, who had earlier received the Nobel Prize in Economics on October 9 for her groundbreaking research on “women’s labour market outcomes,” acknowledged the blunder and posted a denial on her microblogging account.
Goldin’s Nobel Prize victory was notable since it made her the second woman to get this accolade in the discipline of Economics and the third woman overall to receive the renowned award.

Today, the world can once again celebrate the continued wisdom and contributions of this distinguished economist, who remains an enduring luminary in the field of economics and social thought.
