According to poll strategist Prashant Kishor, in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to emerge as the leading party in West Bengal, the state now ruled by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Kishor draws attention to the BJP’s deliberate attempts to increase its presence in south and east India, speculating that these initiatives could result in major victories for the party.
The BJP’s Potential for Success in Other States
According to Kishor, the BJP is also anticipated to win the most seats in the Odisha Lok Sabha and to rank first or second in Telangana, which is dominated by the Congress. Nevertheless, despite its goal for the upcoming elections, he believes that the BJP is unlikely to win more than 370 seats in the 540-member Lok Sabha.
Previous Results for the BJP in the Eastern and Southern States
The BJP has performed admirably in past Lok Sabha elections, failing to secure more than 50 seats overall in states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh,West Bengal,Odisha, Kerala ,Tamil Nadu, and Bihar. Kishor does point out that the BJP has been working harder to increase its influence in these areas, as evidenced by the regular trips made by high-profile figures like Prime Minister Modi, as well as Home Minister Amit Shah.
Obstacles for the Rivals
According to Kishor, the BJP would continue to rule some places unless the opposition—especially the Congress—can seriously weaken the BJP’s hold by gaining at least 100 seats in these regions. Prashant berates the opposition for their poor tactics and minimal attempt to take on the BJP in its strongholds.
Prashant’s Suggestions for the Opposition Parties and Rahul Gandhi
If the Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, does not perform well in the Lok Sabha elections, Kishor suggests that he “step aside” and “take a break”. In order for opposition parties to successfully oppose the BJP, he advises against coalition building and instead suggests that each party should focus on advancing its own agenda and story.
