On November 4, 2023, a strong earthquake struck Nepal, resulting in significant destruction and fatalities across multiple areas. This 6.4-magnitude earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. It was the third big earthquake to strike Nepal in less than a month, underscoring the area’s vulnerability to earthquakes.

Deaths and Distress

There were over 140 injuries and at least 132 recorded deaths as a result of the catastrophic impacts of the earthquake. The districts of Jajarkot and Rukum in Western Nepal were the main areas affected. The local communities suffered damage from the earthquake, including houses being damaged and casualties

The Lamidanda neighborhood of Jajarkot was determined to be the earthquake’s epicenter. Strong earthquakes were reported throughout India’s northern provinces, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and the Delhi-NCR area. Its repercussions were felt far and wide.

Rescue and Search Operations in Nepal

In their attempts to reach the afflicted communities, the local authorities and aid personnel encountered numerous obstacles. Remote villages were cut off from one another by landslides brought on by the earthquake. Rescue and search crews found it challenging to determine the complete scope of the damage and locate individuals in need of help as a result.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the prime minister of Nepal, immediately ordered security agencies to begin rescue and relief efforts for the injured after expressing his sympathies over the deaths. The effects of the earthquake attracted attention from around the world, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered aid and expressed solidarity with Nepal.
