Morocco is currently dealing with the aftermath of a devastating earthquake that, based on official government statistics, resulted in over 1,000 people dead and 329 wounded. In addition to taking lives, the catastrophe also wreaked havoc on the nation’s rich cultural legacy, with historic landmarks taking the brunt of the damage.

As vividly depicted in films posted by Moroccans, Marrakech, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO noted for its signature red walls, sustained substantial damage. Much of the city’s old architecture has been in ruins, and many of the structures have been reduced to dust and debris. Beyond Marrakech, the effects of the earthquake were felt, and people all throughout the devastated area had to face the difficult work of restoring their lives.

The Moroccan army and emergency services moved into action right away, starting humanitarian initiatives to help individuals in need. Rescue efforts, however, were delayed by the treacherous terrain and poor road conditions. The rapid deployment of supplies was hampered by vehicles being stuck on highways that were obstructed by collapsing rocks.

King Mohammed VI quickly gave the military orders to send in expert rescue units, air and land resources, and a surgical field facility in response to the emergency. The Moroccan government had not yet officially asked for global assistance, a necessary step enabling foreign rescuers to join their efforts on the ground, despite condolence messages and requests for help flooding in from across the world.

Surprisingly, despite having a tense relationship with Morocco, neighboring Algeria provided a lifeline by extending its airspace for flights carrying aid and medical supplies from and to the earthquake-stricken area. The Moroccan nation also received profound condolences from the Algerian foreign ministry.

The effects of the earthquake could also be seen in Marrakech’s old city, wherein the destruction of a mosque minaret in the well-known Jemaa al-Fna Square highlighted the seriousness of the harm to Morocco’s cultural legacy.

The world is praying with Morocco as it faces the tremendous problems brought on by this natural calamity and is prepared to provide aid should it be properly sought.
