Mason Greenwood has voluntarily decided to leave Manchester United following a six-month probe into his behavior.

After the football player Mason Greenwood’s criminal charges were dropped in February, United opened an investigation into the facts surrounding Greenwood’s arrest on rape and assault suspicions.

After pictures and an audio recording were shared online, Greenwood was arrested in January 2022. United declared on Monday that they had decided that the content released online failed to offer an accurate depiction and that Mason was not guilty of the crimes with regard to which he had been originally charged, but it is confirmed that the 21-year-old will leave Old Trafford.

Greenwood’s contract, which extends through 2025, hasn’t been terminated, according to reports, but he is not likely to ever play for the club again. According to insiders, United will examine loan bids in addition to permanent relocation.

United announced in a statement that “everybody involved, especially Mason, recognized the difficulties with him resuming his position at Manchester United.” As a result, it had been mutually determined that he should do so outside of Old Trafford, which means they will now collaborate with Mason to accomplish that objective.

Greenwood, who had been prohibited from matches and practice since his original arrest, claimed in an additional statement that he did not do the things he was accused of but agreed that the choice to quit United was “best for us all.”

In the midst of all the statements from United and Greenwood, it was CEO Richard Arnold’s heartfelt open letter that really caught everyone’s attention. In that letter, he pulled back the curtain on the decision-making process, sharing that they had uncovered alternative explanations for the evidence and that the woman’s family had actively participated in the investigation. While the legal charges didn’t stick, Arnold acknowledged that Greenwood still owned up to his mistakes.

Arnold also took a step back and thought about the bigger picture. He understood the immense challenges that Mason would face in trying to rebuild his career under the intense spotlight of Manchester United, especially while juggling the responsibilities of fatherhood. It weighed heavily on his mind to keep the club united amidst strong opinions.

Even though Mason Greenwood’s chapter with United was coming to a close, Arnold made it clear that the story was far from over. The club was committed to providing support to both Mason and the alleged victim as they moved forward in their lives. It was a decision informed by a thorough investigation led by a team of senior executives, and it was a decision that Arnold didn’t take lightly.
