After joining ESPN in 1991, Mortensen started to contribute frequently to SportsCenter and Sunday NFL Countdown. Despite facing the difficulties that came with a Stage 4 throat cancer diagnosis in 2016, he was able to return to ESPN following successful treatment.
As one of the most reputable journalists in the industry, Mortensen covered the NFL with extraordinary skill and enthusiasm throughout his career. His commitment to the trade was clear in every article, dating back to his early years covering the Atlanta Braves and Falcons and continuing through his time at ESPN.
Mortensen was diagnosed with cancer, but his resolve never wavered. While undergoing treatment, he kept up his work, making contributions to ESPN and covering the NFL draft one final time in April before he retired.
