Dry ice

A  hotel manager was charged with poisoning “with the intent to cause hurt or harm” in connection with a shocking incident that occurred in Gurugram, India, wherein the establishment was accused of serving dry ice to patrons under the guise of a mouth freshener.

Five customers suffered from serious reactions, including vomiting and mouth bleeding, which resulted in their hospitalization. The arrest was made in response to a viral video that captured the victims’ anguish and agony—one man puked on the restaurant floor—and exposed the severity of the incident.

What is Dry Ice?

A doctor’s intervention exposed the true nature of the toxic mix, stressing the potentially fatal consequences. Dry ice is widely used in the food and medicinal products industries for product transit, preserving a surface temperature of -78 degrees Celsius to keep items frozen during transportation.

Yet, its improper use in a restaurant setting emphasises the importance of strict safety measures and awareness. The packet provided as a mouth freshener comprised dry ice, a solid form of carbon dioxide experimented with as a cooling agent. Victims suffered burns, bleeding, and nausea after unintentionally consuming the substance.

The Viral Video

The publically available video shows the customers’ screams and cries of pain, highlighting the immediate and serious nature of the incident. Some customers can be seen frantically trying to relieve the burning sensation by putting water in their mouths and putting ice in their mouths.

Search for Absconding Owner

As investigations progress, the restaurant’s owner is currently on the run, so there is a greater need to apprehend the person accountable for the establishment’s operations and making sure the victims receive justice.
