A significant step has been taken by the BJP with the appointment of senior MLA R. Ashok to be the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Karnataka, nearly six months after the state assembly elections. After discussions spanning a whole day in Bengaluru, wherein multiple party leaders were shortlisted for the position, the choice was made.
Ashok’s new position
In his expression of gratitude, Ashok said that he has been assigned the responsibility of putting up a “good performance” in the next Lok Sabha elections. He emphasized the backing of Amit Shah, PM Modi, Nadda, the party’s general secretary Santhosh, and other party officials.
Ashok disclosed that the BJP high leadership has established an objective to secure victories in all 28 parliamentary constituencies during the Lok Sabha elections, highlighting the party’s dedication to a complete triumph.
Disapproval of Congress
The minister made a pointed accusation against the ruling Congress, saying that in the past six months, the party has not done much to help the underprivileged or farmers. He brought up the internal instability in the Congress, citing the disputes between DK Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah over the chief minister position.
While acknowledging the existence of several contenders for the premiership, Ashok underscored the shared goal of securing the reappointment of Narendra Modi. He emphasized that the party must remain united no matter who is picked as leader.
Background and Significance
Ahead of the forthcoming general elections, R. Ashok’s appointment as LoP becomes more significant because the setback in the assembly elections is still fresh in everyone’s mind. This action comes after BY Vijayendra was named chief of the state BJP, suggesting a shift in strategy.
