After serving more than three months in jail on suspicion of spying for Qatar, 7 of the 8 Indian Navy veterans who were previously found guilty and given death sentences have returned home. Waiting on official procedures, the eighth veteran remains in Doha. The announcement comes ahead of the 14 February visit to Doha by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Bharat Mata Ki Jai”

When the seven ex-Navy officers arrived at the Delhi airport, they cheered “Bharat Mata ki Jai” in relief. Veteran Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar was thanked by one of the veterans, who attributed their release to PM Modi’s personal intervention.

The ex-Navy veteran expressed appreciation to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Modi, highlighting the accomplishments of diplomatic efforts. According to Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, the release came after persistent diplomatic efforts and the Prime Minister’s personal supervision of case developments.

 

The Delayed Return of the Eighth Navy Veteran

Seven veterans had a quick recovery, but the eighth took longer because of a number of connected problems rather than difficulties. The person and his family have been in Qatar for more than twenty years, so there are certain procedures that must be followed in order to make the return.

  1. Foreign Secretary Kwatra expressed appreciation for Qatar’s decision to release the Indian Navy veterans and highlighted the Prime Minister’s direct involvement in securing their freedom.
