A Pakistani court deemed Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi,’s 2018 marriage to be unlawful and un-Islamic, resulting in a seven-year prison sentence for the couple. Based on a complaint from Bibi’s ex-husband, the verdict claims that there was a fraudulent marriage and that the Islamic waiting time after a divorce was broken.

Charges against Imran Khan For Leaking State Secrets

Imran Khan and Bibi were convicted of unlawfully selling state gifts and leaking state secrets, in addition to the marriage scandal. The pair was fined 500,000 rupees by the court. The three cases will be appealed, according to Khan’s attorneys.

Khan suffers a hit from these legal failures, as he will be unable to take part in the next national elections. The verdicts cast doubt on Pakistan’s political system as a whole and provide obstacles to Khan’s political career.

Islamic Iddat (Waiting Period) Debate

The main point of argument is the purported breach of the Islamic “Iddat,” or waiting period after divorce. The court determined that Bibi had remarried before the allotted period had passed. In Islamic family law, iddat is essential to determine paternity when a woman gives birth after divorcing or losing a husband.

The media advisor for Khan, Zulfi Bukhari, has declared the charges to be “fake” and intends to file an appeal on the basis of witness statements and procedural irregularities.

Sentences and Present Situation

Bushra Bibi will serve her sentence at their Islamabad home, while Imran Khan will serve his seven years in Rawalpindi. The changes in the law may have an impact on how Khan’s political power develops in the future and add to Pakistan’s changing political scene.
