Expected Cyclonic Transition: Michaung

By Sunday, the depression above the Bay of Bengal is expected to deepen into a cyclonic storm called “Michaung,” according to MD Sunanda, Director of the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Center.

Presently, the depression is roughly 500 km southeast of Puducherry, 510 km southeast to Chennai, 630 km southeast from Nellore, and 710 km southeast of Machilipatnam’s location.

Forecasted Patterns of Rainfall

The IMD has issued alerts for moderate to heavy rainfall in the southern as well as eastern Indian states, namely Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, including Odisha, due to the effect of the system. It is predicted that Puducherry and North Coastal Tamil Nadu will see light to moderate rains on Saturday, which will build into widespread rainfall and severe to exceptionally heavy spells on Sunday.

The government of Puducherry has announced that all schools in the UT, Karaikal, plus Yanam regions will be closed on December 4 in anticipation of Cyclonic Storm “Michaung.”

The weather system is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall on Sunday, and coastal Andhra Pradesh is bracing for it. Heavy to very heavy rains in some areas and extremely severe rainfall in isolated locations are predicted to follow. Rainfall is expected to be widespread with the possibility of exceptionally severe downpours in isolated areas through December 4.

On December 5, isolated areas of heavy to very heavy rainfall are predicted across the south coastal region of Andhra Pradesh, while isolated areas of the north coastal region are predicted to see extremely severe rainfall. It is recommended that authorities and residents remain informed and adopt the appropriate safety measures.
