Following the pardon of a man connected to a case of child sexual assault, Hungarian President Katalin Novak resigned in response to widespread criticism. Protests outside of Novak’s office resulted from the contentious move, which sparked calls for accountability by the opposition. As a close confidant of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Katalin viewed the measure as a mistake, which eventually led to her resignation.

The issue gained political weight because of her affiliation with Viktor Orban, the conservative prime minister. Known for taking a conservative stand, Orban has disagreed with the European Commission on a number of matters, such as LGBTQ rights in schools. A protest at Novak’s office resulted from the controversy, which intensified calls for her resignation.

Katalin apologized to everyone she may have offended and to the victims who may have felt abandoned after admitting her error and resigning from her position. Judit Varga, the former minister of justice and another Orban loyalist, resigned as a result of the uproar surrounding the presidential pardon. This development underscores the political fallout from the child abuse case as well as the public’s call for responsibility.
