As confirmed by his family, 72-year-old veteran Ghazal vocalist Pankaj Udhas passed away on February 26 following a protracted illness. Following cancer treatment, the ghazal master passed away at 11 AM in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital.

Pankaj Udhas and the Mainstream Ghazal Revolution
Ghazals proved to be Udhas’ genuine passion in music, albeit he started out with Hindi movies and Indian pop. He began a flourishing career with his debut ghazal album, “Aahat,” released in 1980. His melodic voice and deep understanding of ghazal poetry were showcased through the publication of more than 60 solo albums and other collaborative projects throughout the years.
By breaking through the ghazal niche and making the genre more widely available, Udhas was instrumental in bringing ghazals into the mainstream. His impact on the music industry is irreversible, and his classic songs—such as “Chitthi Aayi Hai” from Mahesh Bhatt’s 1986 film “Naam”—remain popular with listeners.
