Two Armenian troops were killed in a recent incident along the tightly guarded border between Armenia and Azerbaijan; this was the first fatal altercation since last year’s start of negotiations to end a 30-year conflict. Azerbaijan is allegedly trying to inflame tensions, according to the Armenia’s Defense Ministry.

Fatal Clash

An incident at Nerkin Hand in southern Armenia resulted in the deaths of two Armenian soldiers and multiple injuries.

This took place in the midst of discussions to put an end to a prolonged dispute in which Azerbaijan reclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh from ethnic Armenians.

Armenian Perspective

An attempt to exacerbate tensions is alleged by Armenia against Azerbaijan.

The election of President Ilham Aliyev to a fifth term has sparked worries about possible military action by Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan’s Response

Citing an alleged instigation by Armenia’s forces, Azerbaijan’s border agency describes the operation as a retaliation.

They claim they might take more severe and forceful action in response to any subsequent provocations.

They are also  blaming Armenia’s political and military establishment.

Contested Incidents

In an area along the northwest border, about 300 kilometers away from Nerkin Hand, Azerbaijan reports Armenia’s forces opened fire on Baku’s areas.

To complicate matters, the conflicting accounts are refuted by the Ministry of Defense of Armenia.
