When residents woke up to a thick blanket of hazardous smoke, Delhi’s festivities for Diwali took a gloomy turn. According to reports, the air quality index (AQI) in a number of locations exceeded the “very poor” and “severe” ratings, reaching dangerously high levels. Concerns over the harmful effects of the air on health were raised by the concerning AQI readings.

An Ideal Storm of Elements

During this time of year, Delhi’s air quality usually declines due to low temperatures and stubble blazing in neighboring states. The problem is made worse by the inclusion of Diwali celebrations, which turn the city into an actual smoke chamber.

The Supreme Court’s Preemptive Actions to Stop Firecrackers

Ahead of Diwali, the Supreme Court moved proactively, issuing an order prohibiting the use of barium and certain chemicals in firecrackers. The court anticipated a drop in air quality. Notably, this directive covered the entire nation and did not just apply to the National Capital Region (NCR).

Declining Air Quality Following Diwali

On the day before Diwali, Delhi’s air quality was at its highest in eight years, but things rapidly deteriorated. After peaking at 202 on Sunday morning, the AQI quickly declined from Sunday night and Monday morning. The medical community became concerned when the concentration of PM2.5 fine particulate matter skyrocketed to levels 20 times higher than those considered safe by the World Health Organization.

Potential Health Effects and Immediate Actions

Medical professionals predict that prolonged exposure to firework smoke may cause health problems such as throat irritation and irritated eyes. It is highly recommended that residents refrain from engaging in any outside physical activity, particularly if they are suffering symptoms such as weariness, coughing, chest discomfort or breathing difficulties. It is crucial to keep windows completely closed and avoid burning anything, including wood, candles, or incense. It is advised to wear P-100 respirators or N-95 masks when going outside
