According to a ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court, former President Donald Trump will not be able to compete in the state’s 2024 presidential primary. The court disqualified Trump on the grounds that he was responsible for encouraging the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, creating history as the first court to do so.

Awaiting Appeal Before US Supreme Court

The verdict, which was issued on December 19, has been put on hold in order to give Trump time to file an appeal with the US Supreme Court. The campaign of the former president has said that it plans to file an appeal, with a deadline of January 4 in accordance with the ruling.

The Colorado Supreme Court based its ruling on the idea that he is front-runner for the Republican nomination, cannot be allowed to run for office because of his involvement in inciting violence against the federal government, as stated in the United States Constitution.

Attacks on the Capitol as Reasons for Disqualification

A group of Colorado voters filed the lawsuit, with backing from Citizens of Responsibility and Ethics in Dc. They maintained that Trump ought to be removed from office for encouraging the Capitol attack, an effort to prevent Joe Biden from taking over as president following the 2020 election.

Trump’s campaign denounced the court’s judgment as “flawed” and “undemocratic,” vowing to challenge the verdict. This lawsuit represents the first constitutional challenge against Trump’s prospective 2024 presidential campaign that is directly connected to his attempts to rig the 2020 results.
