No visa issues? India Suspends Visa Issuance to Canadian Citizens Amid Diplomatic Row
India has temporarily stopped issuing visas to Canadian nationals, claiming “security threats” that have interfered with the smooth operation of the Embassy there. The decision was made amid rising tensions between the two countries as a result of remarks made by the leader of Canada that implied India was responsible for the murder of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil.
The unfortunate death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan Sikh politician, on June 18 is to blame for the ongoing diplomatic strife. The Canadian government has expressed worry about what it believes to be solid evidence connecting New Delhi’s operatives to the murder. The Indian government responded by swiftly denying any connection and characterizing the accusations as “absurd.”
India and Canada’s relationship has been tense for some time, and it now seems to be at an impasse. Both nations have strong relationships with the US as well as cooperation in trade plus security. However, recent events have brought the level of bilateral ties to an all-time low.
The decision by India to stop providing visa services to Canadians now also applies to Canadians who are abroad. This action, according to a spokesperson for the Indian foreign ministry in Delhi, is in reaction to the threats that were made against the Indian high commission and embassies in Canada, disrupting their routine business.
India is also demanding equality in rank along with diplomatic power between the diplomatic posts of the two countries, claiming Canadian meddling in Indian internal affairs as justification.
India has stated numerous times how concerned they are about Khalistani terrorists and radicals being sheltered in Canada. The Indian government asserts that Canada’s unfounded accusations are an attempt to draw attention away from these people, who present a danger to India’s territorial integrity as well as sovereignty. These worries have long been an issue in the relationship between the two countries.
There are several factors at play, including strong historical ties between India and Canada. 1.4 million people of Indian descent and a sizable Sikh community reside in Canada. Additionally, India sends a substantial number of foreign students to Canada, making a considerable contribution to that country’s educational system.
India is still looking for information about the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, and Canada is asking that someone be held accountable.
