Cisco to Acquire Splunk in $28 Billion Cash Deal, Becoming a Software Giant

Cisco has announced that it will acquire cybersecurity software provider Splunk for a staggering $28 billion. With this contract, Splunk will be valued at $157 per share, a 31% increase over its Wednesday closing price. It is said to be Cisco’s largest acquisition to date. Cisco hopes to become one of the biggest software firms in the world as a result of the acquisition, which will also hasten the company’s transition to recurring revenue.

This strategic acquisition has attracted a lot of attention; after it was announced, Splunk’s share price rose by 21%, while Cisco’s share price fell by 4%. Splunk’s competence is in data analysis and surveillance, which helps firms reduce security risks and quickly fix technical problems.

In order to fulfill rising customer demand, Cisco, primarily recognized for its computer networking technology, has been expanding its cybersecurity branch. The CEO of Cisco, Chuck Robbins, stressed the vital role that AI plays in network security by combining Splunk’s expertise with AI capability.

According to regulatory approvals, the merger between Cisco and Splunk is expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of 2024. Yet, if regulatory obstacles prevent the acquisition from going through or if Cisco withdraws, Splunk will be charged a $1.48 billion cancellation fee. On the other hand, Splunk will pay Cisco a termination fee of one billion dollars if it decides to part ways.

Following the purchases of security-focused businesses including Armorblox, Oort, Valtix, as well as Lightspin in 2023, this latest purchase demonstrates Cisco’s dedication to bolstering its cybersecurity portfolio. The $28 billion purchase price equals almost 13% of Cisco’s total market value, which is a huge commitment for a business that often steers clear of megadeals. Before acquiring Splunk, Cisco’s greatest transaction was its $6.9 billion acquisition of Scientific Atlanta in 2006 when the company’s market capitalization was slightly over $100 billion.

This acquisition places Cisco in a prominent position as a participant in the software and cybersecurity areas, enabling it to tackle the ever-increasing problems of the digital age.
