Manipur Gripped by Unprecedented Ethnic Conflict, 8 Recent Deaths Highlight the Urgent Need for Peace

Unprecedented and persistent violence involving ethnic groups has enveloped Manipur in a frightening turn of events. Three days ago, a furious shootout broke out along the boundary between the districts of Bishnupur and Churachandpur, leaving a path of devastation and misery in its wake.

PC Nair, the Director General of the Assam Rifles, has referred to the scenario as unparalleled and emphasized that Manipur has never known such levels of turmoil. Eight people have died as a result of the current spike in violence, and a lot more have been hurt, including security personnel. Over 50,000 people have been forced to flee their homes as a result of the continuous violence, and there have been over 160 fatalities.

The proliferation of arms in both the Meitei as well as Kuki communities constitutes one of the most serious problems the government is now facing. Nair has emphasized the necessity of controlling the situation and has emphasized how dangerously armed the community has become. He emphasizes how crucial it is to get these weapons back in order to bring about peace.

The slopes of Khoirentak in the Bishnupur region and the surrounding villages in the Churachandpur district have been afflicted by constant shooting. Roadblocks have complicated the situation and made it difficult for forces sent to put an end to the bloodshed.
