At the age of 86, Manohar Joshi, a well-known member of the Shiv Sena and former chief minister of Maharashtra, passed away on Friday, February 23. A political era comes to an end with Joshi’s passing.
Speaker of the Lok Sabha and Chief Minister
During his tenure as Maharashtra’s chief minister (1995–1999), Joshi made a substantial impact on the administration of the state. Later, from 2002 to 2004, he was the esteemed Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
Manohar Joshi’s Loyalty to Balasaheb Thackeray
Joshi was a devoted supporter of Balasaheb Thackeray and remained steadfast in his allegiance despite public criticism. Joshi defended Thackeray in the face of criticism, saying, “Balasaheb is my leader.” His polite resignation in 1999 to allow Narayan Rane to succeed him demonstrated his unwavering devotion to the Shiv Sena chief.
During the Bombay riots of 1992–1993, Joshi and Thackeray were accused of encouraging violence against Muslims. Both politicians were implicated in the Srikrishna Commission report, but Joshi, as Chief Minister, dismissed it as “anti-Hindu” and refused to follow its recommendations. Maharashtra’s political history during that period was complicated, as evidenced by the controversy surrounding his term.
