The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted tremendous rain, thunderstorms, and lightning in Chennai and other districts of Tamil Nadu. Due to the conditions, Thiruvallur’s schools and colleges have closed, as have schools in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, as well as Kanchipuram.

The Rain on Wednesday

On Wednesday, a lot of rain flooded Chennai’s low-lying areas and neighboring districts, seriously disrupting traffic flow. While certain sections have seen less rain than before, Chennai is still flooded in several areas due to this morning’s heavy downpours.

Chennai’s Drainage Issues

Commissioner J Radhakrishnan of recognized the drainage issues, pointing out that there are only 4 outlets for water to escape out of the city despite its closeness to the sea.

Delay in Conducting Political Yatra

Amidst the IMD’s forecast of heavy rains, Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai declared that the ‘En Mann En Makkal’ yatra would be postponed until December 5. Given the bad weather, the decision puts the safety of the public and BJP workers first.

The Orange Alert from IMD

On December 2 and 3, the IMD issued an orange advisory for the city and the surrounding regions, indicating the probability of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. The warning highlights the importance of exercising extra vigilance and being prepared.

Because of the continuous rains, the authorities of Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet declared a holiday for schools. Rainfall is expected to persist over the weekend in coastal areas, and on December 2, a possible cyclonic storm is expected to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal.

Residents and authorities in Tamil Nadu are alert and emphasizing safety precautions in the face of unpredictable weather patterns as they deal with these weather difficulties.
