Tharman Shanmugaratnam: Singapore’s 9th President of Indian Descent

On September 14, eminent economist Tharman Shanmugaratnam, of Indian descent, took the oath of office as the country’s ninth president, marking a key moment in Singapore’s history. The 66-year-old president, who is going to replace President Halimah Yacob, the country’s first female president, whose tenure ended on September 13, will hold office for a period of six years.

The majority-Chinese society of Singapore largely supported Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s candidacy, proving his widespread appeal across the country. He has a lengthy and renowned career in public service, dedicating himself to and being skilled in facilitating Singapore.

Tharman has played important roles in Singapore’s administration over the years. Between 2019 to 2023, he was a senior minister, in charge of managing significant facets of the country’s political system. Prior to that, from 2015 until 2023, he served as Singapore’s coordinating minister for social affairs, where he was instrumental in developing the nation’s social policies.

Particularly, Tharman served as the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s chairman from 2011 to 2023, proving his financial know-how. His exceptional career in public service is further proven by his time serving as Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister from May 2011 until May 2019.

Due to his Indian ancestry, Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s election as president of Singapore has unique importance. He joins a small group of influential leaders of Indian descent who have made major contributions to Singapore’s development.
