Russia struck Ukraine with one of its most deadly missile barrages, tragically killing civilians and causing extensive damage. The attack struck multiple areas,  raising alarm throughout the world.

High Casualties and Widespread Damage by Russian Missiles

On Friday, the missile barrage was carried out, leaving over 120 people wounded and 31 civilians dead. A maternity unit in the east, as well as residential structures in Kyiv, the south and west of Ukraine, were also affected. The catastrophic effects highlight how much more intense the war has become.

Russia

Poland, a NATO member, reported an alarming occurrence in which a Russian missile was said to have penetrated its airspace for around 40 kilometers before quickly returning to Ukraine. This breach begs the issue of how far the conflict has spread, and Moscow has not yet responded.

Ukrainian Response and Truce Rejection

The large year-end airstrike, as stressed by Ukraine’s foreign minister, rules out any chance of a truce with Russia. According to Ukrainian leaders, the strike should serve as a wake-up call for the international community. They have requested that Western partners provide ongoing military support.

Of the 158 aerial targets that Russia launched, the Ukrainian Air Force reported effectively intercepting 87 cruise missiles plus 27 drones. The military reaction demonstrates Ukraine’s defense measures against the heavy missile assault.

 Effect on Vital Infrastructure

At least nine individuals were reported killed and thirty injured in the capital city of Kyiv; residential and business properties took the brunt of the attack. Authorities in Ukraine had earlier issued a warning about possible attacks on vital infrastructure, such as the energy grid.
