Raghubar Das, the previous chief minister of Jharkhand, has been named the governor of Odisha, which is a significant political step. This choice, announced via a formal statement that extends from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, is a critical turning point in Das’s political career and raises concerns about his future involvement in active politics.

Raghubar Das’s Political Journey

Raghubar Das, a well-known politician in Jharkhand, is unique in that he represents the only non-tribal Chief Minister in a state with a sizable tribal population. In the 2005 Jharkhand Assembly elections, he presided over the state’s affairs and led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a significant victory, winning 30 seats. As the Urban Development Minister for the 2005 NDA administration headed by Chief Minister Arjun Munda, his influence in politics grew. In addition, he headed the BJP in the state’s general elections in 2009.

The BJP’s victory in the Jharkhand Assembly elections in 2014 marked an important milestone in Raghubar Das’s political career. On December 28, 2014, he became the first non-tribal and sixth Chief Minister of Jharkhand as a result of this victory. He was the initial non-tribal chief minister to serve a full term during his time in office. He resigned as a result of his party’s poor performance in the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, which saw them win only 25 out of 81 seats.

Governorship of Odisha

Raghubar Das now assumes a new duty as the state’s new governor. This action not only denotes a turning point in his political career, but it also raises concerns about his potential engagement in politics in the future. It begs the question of whether his influence will continue to impact Jharkhand’s political climate or if he will adopt a different role in his new role.

Political Reactions

The political community has taken note of Raghubar Das’s electoral journey from Chief Minister of Jharkhand to Governor of Odisha. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and the National Congress have commented on this development, bringing up the BJP’s internal issues and speculating on what Das’s new position would entail.
