He rose to prominence as a sports presenter, dabbled in acting in films and TV shows, and developed into a popular commercial spokesman. His gruff attitude frequently concealed a softer side, which he occasionally displayed in his acting jobs.

For the entirety of his football career, Butkus was renowned for staying local. At Chicago Vocational High, he was a standout linebacker, fullback, as well as kicker. He then continued playing football at the University of Chicago. He was the eighth child out of eight children when he was born on the ninth of December 1942, and he was raised in the South Side of the city as an enthusiast of the Bears’ crosstown competitors, the Chicago Cardinals.
