Today marked the official opening of the 11 km elevated Metro Rail Line 1 connecting Belapur and Pendhar, which is part of an initiative to improve accessibility in Navi Mumbai and kick in a new age of effective public transit for the city. In accordance to the Maharashtra government’s order to get the metro operating as soon as possible, the services started at 3 pm without a formal public program.

The Maharashtra government decided to start metro services in response to complaints that it was taking too long to open the line, even though it had received regulatory approvals in June.
