A powerful earthquake that struck north-central Japan on Monday with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 raised concerns for coastal areas. Following a sequence of strong earthquakes that rocked western regions, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for locations along the coast including Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures.

Japan’s Range of Earthquakes and Alerts

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the earthquake, which was centered in Ishikawa and neighboring prefectures, had an initial magnitude of 7.6. Within 300 kilometers of the origin near Noto, Ishigawa, tsunami waves were predicted. A meter-plus waves crashed into Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. All people were strongly encouraged to flee to higher ground by national network NHK.

The country was hit by a series of earthquakes in quick succession. It began with a 5.7-magnitude earthquake at 4:06 pm and became stronger with a 7.6-magnitude earthquake at 4:10 pm, followed by multiple more. Not long after, another earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 was recorded by the US Geological Survey.

Impact and Evacuations

People were strongly urged to evacuate coastal regions and seek higher ground while tsunami warnings were in effect. Ishikawa’s Noto shore was battered by waves as high as five meters, forcing evacuations. Although the exact amount of the devastation has not yet been determined, reports of massive infrastructure damage, including collapsed houses and electrical poles in Suzu City, Ishikawa, point to significant destruction.

Power Outages and Disruptions

Major roads close to the epicenter of the earthquake were closed as a result, leaving nearly 36,000 homes without electricity. Authorities are striving to secure the safety of citizens in the impacted areas as the region deals with the repercussions of the earthquake. As evaluations are carried out over the next several days, the situation will become more apparent.
