Derna has been devastated by the flash floods, and the rescue support of the Tripoli-based administration has been tasked with the grim duty of rescuing the deceased. Over 5,000 people are still unaccounted for in Derna alone, and about 7,000 others suffered injury by the flood water’s sheer intensity.

The spokesman for the nation’s armed troops stationed in the east blamed the collapse of two neighboring dams for the disastrous flash flood. Residents shared videos online showing the extent of the destruction, which has resulted in entire neighborhoods being washed away.

Emergency personnel are working nonstop to search through the debris for the dead as rescue and recovery activities get underway. While heavier machinery, like as excavators, has not yet arrived in the city, inflatable vessels are being used to recover bodies from the water. The circumstances are still severe, and Derna is suffering a terrible toll.
