A 5.4 magnitude earthquake near Hope Bay caused a quick and major seismic event in Jamaica. Residents were alarmed by this incidence, which prompted quick reactions.

Smaller earthquakes have historically occurred frequently in Jamaica, with about 200 taking place year. But larger earthquakes are uncommon. Historical events of note include the deadly 1692 earthquake at Port Royal and the 1907 earthquake in Kingston, the nation’s capital, which resulted in the deaths of almost 1,000 people.

Jamaica, along with neighboring Haiti and the Dominican Republic, is situated on top of the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone. The region is vulnerable to sporadic seismic activity because of its geological makeup.

Residents reported terror and strong shaking, but as of right now, no major damage or injuries have been reported. The Jamaican community’s exceptional strength in responding to this natural calamity is indicative of its resilience.
