Popular online meal delivery company Zomato recently made news by announcing that it will be offering ‘Pure Veg Mode’ and ‘Pure Veg Fleet’ services, which are targeted at Indian vegetarian consumers. This action has generated controversy and prompted concerns about possible discrimination against delivery workers, despite the fact that some have praised it as a step toward accommodating the nutritional choices of a sizable segment of the population. 

In response to comments from vegetarian customers who had worries regarding the handling and preparation of their meals, Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal announced the launch of the “Pure Veg Mode.” Goyal said the new service was introduced to meet the demands of the large vegetarian community in India, emphasizing the value of accommodating their tastes.

Zomato’s answer

Deepinder Goyal explained that the “Pure Veg Mode” was implemented just to accommodate dietary preferences and was not intended to discriminate against delivery partners depending on their dietary selections. This was in response to the criticism. He clarified that in order to avoid cross-contamination and guarantee that vegetarian orders stayed clear of any traces of non-vegetarian food, the fleets had to be kept apart.

Goyal pledged to uphold social responsibility by assuring all parties involved that being a part of the “Veg delivery fleet” would not subject delivery partners to prejudice on the basis of their dietary choices.
