Uma Satya Sai Gadde, an Indian student, passed away tragically in Cleveland, Ohio. His death been confirmed by the Indian Consulate in New York. The consulate said that a police investigation is in progress and that it is keeping in contact with Gadde’s family in India throughout this trying period.

An increase in the number of incidents

Gadde’s passing is the most recent in a string of events that have impacted Americans of Indian descent. There have been at least nine documented deaths of Indian and Indian-origin students nationwide since the start of 2024.

Last month, in a particularly upsetting occurrence, Amarnath Ghosh, a 34-year-old trained classical dancer, was shot and killed in St. Louis, Missouri. In a similar vein, Purdue University student Sameer Kamath, 23, was discovered lifeless on February 5 in an Indiana nature preserve.

Cause of Death Unknown

The Indian Consulate General in New York has intervened to help, helping to arrange for the return of Gadde’s remains to India. Nevertheless, Gadde’s cause of death is now unknown.

Officials from the Indian Embassy in Washington and its diplomats around the US have been interacting virtually with Indian students in response to the wave of attacks and tragedies impacting Indian students. These discussions center on improving safety and assistance among the Indian diaspora while also addressing the well-being of students.

With these devastating deaths, the Indian community in the US is calling for increased cooperation to solve underlying problems and enhance safety protocols for Indian students. In order to guarantee the safety and well-being of Indian students studying overseas, communication and cooperation between Indian authorities, US security agencies, and educational institutions are essential.
